Getting to Selous game reserve:
The Selous Game Reserve can be accessed on a road safari however, when traveling from Dar es Salaam, there is a direct route that covers a distance of 240 km / 149 miles following the eastern road. The drive is bumpy and long taking you 6 to 7 hours which is nearly half a day’s drive. This road takes you through Kibiti as well as Mloka and you will finally be able to access the park through Mtemere gate.
In case you are combining the Selous with other game parks on the Southern Safari Circuit like Ruaha National Park and Mikumi NP then you can take an alternative route that takes you through Morogoro town via Kisaki and Mkuyuni and then finally enter the park through the Matembwe Gate. The drive heading out of Morogoro town, will offer you a chance to see the traditional way the native people live and work within the rural villages in Tanzania. unique about these areas, is that the urban famous life style has not yet washed away their upheld way of life living beside just a few stores that retail soft drinks including a number of international brand names.
In case you drive through this area on one of the market days, you will get a chance to see the locals carry out their trade with the trading corridor. The narrow pathway can always lead you to animals and gazelles that may have stayed into game control pockets as you enter Selous from Dar es Salaam.
A road from Morongoro can also lead you to the magnificent contours of Sable Mountain lodge as well as Uluguru Mountains at a distance. Taking the access road from Dar es Salaam would be an enjoyable trip with super views of the Tanzania countryside dotted with tall palms and lush grassland in hilly areas.
By Railroad System
The other way to access the Selous Reserve is by using the TAZARA (Tanzania Zambia Railway). It begins in Dar es Salaam, and takes you on an adventure through the trails in Tanzania’s wilderness up to the Matambwe railway. On this journey, you will enjoy the attractiveness of the green countryside. The ride takes 4 to 5 hours.
By Air transport
The third alternative to get to Selous Game Reserve is by using a charter flight. There are numerous departure flights connecting from Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Arusha that land at different accommodations or public access airstrips.
With most tourists on a Tanzania Safari entering the country through the Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), they can easily catch a connect flight to Selous from there. These scheduled flights serve the Selous and the neighboring Ruaha national park. This is the fastest way to get to Selous game reserve despite the fact that it is the most expensive.
Although hidden away in the southern remote part of Tanzania, the Selous ranks as the largest Game reserve in Africa and is among the most popular game viewing areas on the entire Africa continent.
