The quickest way to get from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) to Seronera is to taxi and fly which costs $180 – $230 and takes 1h 33m. How far is it from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) to Seronera? The distance between Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and Seronera is 272 km. The road distance is 353.3 km.

The recommended point of entry is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) which lies between the towns of Moshi and Arusha. The airport is located about 200 miles / 320 kilometers from the park’s southern entrance.
 

The best option to get to Serengeti Natinal Park is to fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) which is situated about 46km/29mi from Arusha. It is also possible to fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), just outside of Dar es Salaam, and fly on to Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Four days. Serengeti is a huge national park so we would recommend minimum four days in order to properly explore it and find the wildlife. Being so large, you do need to spend time driving around looking for the Big Five, which takes time. Plus in four days you’ll experience different weather and a variety of safari experiences.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) which is situated between Arusha and Moshi, this is the most common entry point into the country for those exploring the Northern Safari Circuit that includes the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara.
 

The best times to visit Serengeti National Park are from January to February or from June through September, although you should plan your trip around the movement of The Great Migration.

Getting to Serengeti National Park by road

Serengeti drive-in safaris

The most popular way to travel to Serengeti National Park by road is by booking a drive-in safari. In general the drive-in safaris start from the town of Arusha. As it will take approximately eight hours to travel from Arusha to the Serengeti National Park, an overnight stay at one or more wildlife sites en route is usually part of your safari itinerary.

Serengeti self-drive safaris

Although not recommended, the Serengeti National Park is accessible when travelling by (rental) vehicle. Please keep in mind that careful planning is necessary when driving by yourself through the Serengeti National Park. A 4×4 vehicle is required to be able to access all roads throughout the year. Petrol is sold at Seronera in the Southern Serenget.

Kilimanjaro International Airport provides a convenient way for visitors to fly in and out of Tanzania for their climb and safari trips. The airport is located just 40 minutes from the gateway towns of Moshi and Arusha by vehicle, making it easy to begin your adventure soon after you arrive.

We describe the entry process to obtain a visa and clear immigration on our site here. Once you are through security, grab your checked baggage and head for the exit. You will be required to scan your baggage before leaving.

There is usually a crowd of drivers just outside the airport who are waiting to pick up their passengers. Ultimate Kilimanjaro provides pick up and drop off services to our clients. These must be pre-booked ahead of time. If you have transfers booked with us, look for the friendly driver wearing a blue Ultimate Kilimanjaro shirt and holding a sign with your name on it. He will help you carry your bags to the vehicle and then drive you to your hotel.

When you are departing Tanzania, it is recommended that you arrive at the airport two hours before your flight time. Note that you will not be able to get your boarding pass from the airline booth until it is within three hours of your departure. So do not come to the airport more than three hours beforehand or you will have to wait until the airline booth is open for your flight.

With your boarding pass and passport, you clear security and enter the common waiting area. There are six gates at Kilimanjaro airport. The seating at the gate faces outdoors through large windows so you can see your plane as it arrives.

When you land at Kilimanjaro Airport

You will be instructed to get your hand luggage when your aircraft lands at Kilimanjaro International Airport and to go down some steps to the runway’s asphalt. While many flights land at the airport without stopping in Europe and North America, most airports in East Africa lack the infrastructure to allow passengers to depart through a ramp and land at the airport. You will depart the aircraft straight outside, a few hundred meters away from the airport building, using a stairway on wheels that will be linked to the exits. Ask the flight attendants if you need help bringing your hand luggage into the airport; they will be pleased to assist.

You may then pick up your checked luggage in the baggage claim area, which is just after immigration. Customs could ask to see your baggage once you have them all. Most safaris to the Serengeti start from the town of Arusha. The best option to get there is to fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) which is situated about 46km/29mi from Arusha. There are regular flights from Arusha to several airstrips inside the park.

It’s also possible to drive; the trip is about 325km/202mi and will take about eight hours. It is a bumpy ride but it’s scenic and you’ll see some wildlife on the way.

As the trip takes you through the Ngorongoro Conservation area, a popular option is to fly one way, and drive the other way taking in an overnight stop to visit the Ngorongoro Crater. Coming from the crater, the distance to the Seronera area in the Serengeti is about 140km/90mi, and the driving time is about three hours.

Kilimanjaro international airport to Serengeti national park is about 420 kilometres. It takes about 8 hours to drive from the airport to the gates of Serengeti national park during safaris. Another option of getting to Serengeti national park Tanzania safarisis by taking a domestic flight from Arusha airport to the airstrips around the national park such as Seronera airstrip, Kogatende airstrip, Ndutu airstrip, Lobo airstrip, Grumeti airstrip, Sasakwa airstrip and also Kirawira airstrip.

Some of the airlines which offer domestic flights to Serengeti national park include Coastal aviation, Regional air, Flight link Tanzania among others. The flight from Arusha to Serengeti national park takes about 2 to 3 hours.
