Things to consider before rent a car in Tanzania
4X4 SAFARI VEHICLE FOR TRANSFERS AND GAME DRIVES

Road-based safaris use closed 4WD’s, typically Toyota Landcruisers with a pop-top roof. For fly-in safaris, a combination of light aircraft and open-sided 4WD’s with a sun canopy, are used. Open-sided 4WD’s vehicles offer greater visibility and provide unobstructed photography opportunities in all directions.

On average, a Tanzania safari costs $ 200 USD per person per day. Midrange Price: is from $ 350 USD per person per day. Tanzania Luxury Safari Price is: from $ 600 USD per person per day.

Ngorongoro Crater: Haven for the Big 5

It’s renowned for delivering the easiest and most reliable Big 5 sightings in East Africa, and is provides what is arguably the best safari in Tanzania.

When on safari in an open vehicle there is nothing between you and Africa’s wilderness and wildlife. Sounds are more easily heard, smells are easier to pick up, and most importantly it is far easier to take photos and follow animals as they move around.

YES! A self-drive safari through Tanzania offers the chance to discover the stunning sceneries, many animals and cultures of Tanzania on your own. Enjoy Tanzania at your own pace with a 4WD jeep provided by Explore Tanzania! Explore Tanzania offers a reliable 4WD car, so you can start your own carefree adventure.

Manyara National Park is a sanctuary for hippo, giraffe, impala and zebra, and its lake a magnet for birdlife, including sizeable flocks of pink flamingos. Mahogany and sausage trees are alive with blue and vervet monkeys; elephants feed on fallen fruit, and bushbuck, baboons and leopard make their homes in the forest.

There are plenty of accommodation options in and around Lake Manyara to suit various budgets.

Options include campsites, bandas (basic brick cabins with thatched roofs), tented camps, and lodges.

There is only one lodge inside the national park itself — AndBeyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge.

The Tree Lodge is renowned for its gorgeous tree-house-style suites, not to mention its night safaris and private canopy walkway that allows guests to explore the forest.

  • For lodges outside the park, but close to it, you can consider:
  • Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge
  • The Plantation Lodge
  • Escarpment Luxury Lodge
  • Manyara Serena Safari Lodge
  • 1. Game drives within the crater
  • 2. Walks along the crater rim
  • 3. Meet the Maasai and learn about their culture and traditions
  • 4. Day trips to the fascinating Olduvai Gorge, known as the ‘Cradle of Man’
  • 5. See Empakaai Crater, the lesser-known, younger sister of Ngorongoro Crater

The wildlife living in the crater itself are there all year, so from a game viewing point of view, Ngorongoro Crater is good all year. Due to its size, the area may get crowded during the peak tourist season which lasts most of the year, excluding April and May when major downpours make some of the roads hazardous and unpassable.

By car – Ngorongoro Crater is about 185 km from Arusha by road. The trip can take between two and four hours.

By air – There are daily flights from Arusha to Lake Manyara Airstrip. From there, it’s a scenic one-and-a-half hour trip to the Ngorongoro Crater. Arusha is served by two airports. Domestic Arusha Airport has daily flights from numerous local destinations while Kilimanjaro International Airport has daily flights from local, African and international airlines.

Within the Ngorongoro Crater, there is a huge concentration of wildlife, including the Big Five. Hippo, crocodile, zebra, a wide range of antelope and plains game live here, too. Regular sightings of the critically endangered black rhino have been reported.

It’s estimated that about 25,000 big animals live within this natural enclosure. Expect to see many animals within a short space of time in the fertile bowl created by the caldera.

Visiting Ngorongoro is always an unforgettable experience, both because of the unrivalled amount of wildlife you get to see in one day, and the high costs to see it…

When planning your safari, take into account the following entrance fees:

Fees are quoted per person incl VAT, per single entry up to 24 hours.

  • The fee for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is $70.80 per person
  • The vehicle entry fee for your Roadtrip Tanzania rental car (locally registered vehicle) is 23,600 TSH ($10) per day for the RAV4 and 41,300 TSH ($20) per day for the Landcruiser.
  • If you want to enter the crater, you have to pay the additional Crater Service Fee of $295 per vehicle each time you go down the crater.
  • Public campsites are $35 per person/night. Special campsites are $50 per person/night.
For a detailed cost overview, check the official Ngorongoro Crater website.

Yes, you can do a self-drive safari in the Ngorongoro Crater. The park wardens at the NCA entrance gate will advise you to take a ranger-guide, but this is not compulsory, and not needed in our opinion either. The safari tracks on the carter floor are well maintained and sign posted, and its basically impossible to get lost.

Karatu is a nice and affordable place to base yourself from when visiting the NCA and the Ngorongoro Crater. We have covered tips on where to stay in Karatu on our accomodation page. If you want to stay inside the NCA, the most affordable option is Simba Public Campsite A, on the crater rim.

The rest of the campsites on the crater rim are so-called ‘special campsites’, largely reserved by private safari companies, who bid on them for the season. As an individual traveller, you won’t be able to stay there. The less interesting special campsites are not taken by the safari companies and are available for booking by individual travellers.

The most affordable lodge on the crater rim is Rhino Lodge – it doesn’t have a view though. All the other lodges are very expensive; Serengeti’s top choice among these would be Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge.

Best Ngorongoro Safari Tours

A visit to the Ngorongoro Crater is an experience of a lifetime. There are few places that have wildlife densities and variety on this level. It is not unusual to see the Big Five in one day – and all this in the most amazing setting with a backdrop of the 600m/1,968ft-high crater wall.

The Ngorongoro Crater offers some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa. All the major safari animals occur in great numbers. The resident population of black rhino is a real treat, as rhino are very difficult to spot elsewhere in Tanzania. The crater is also home to some very impressive elephant bulls with huge tusks. Lake Magadi often harbors large flocks of flamingo.
