How to get to Tanzania?
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is situated 50km/31mi east of Arusha, the gateway of Tanzania’s popular Northern safari circuit. The drive from the airport to Arusha takes about 1½ hours*.
Tanzania’s main airport is Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), located 13km/8mi southwest of Dar es Salaam. This is the entry point for visitors to the southern parks.
From Arusha or Dar es Salaam, you can fly or drive between reserves. Some domestic flights out of Arusha will leave from Kilimanjaro International Airport, while others leave from the much smaller Arusha Airport (ARK) located 8km/5mi west of town. However you choose to travel, in most cases, your local tour operator will pick you up from the airport and arrange all further transportation as part of your safari package.

The Great Serengeti in Southern Serenget:
Wildebeest and zebras in the Serengeti eco-system are the actors of “the greatest show on Earth”, they are part of the largest migratory movement of wild animals anywhere in the world, about 2,000,000 ungulates constantly moving in search of pastures and water.
Between December and March the herds gather on the short grass plains, which stretch from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to southern Serengeti.
It is calving season, 80% of the newborns see the light between January and February and predators seem to know it well.
Seeing the migration in the Serengeti is simply the best you can get from a Safari in Africa.
Day 1: lake Manyara or Visit Mto wa Mbu Village
Departure from Kilimanjaro Airport or from Arusha town for Karatu, Ngorongoro region.
If your flight lands before 9 a.m. you can choose between the following activities:
1) Game drives in the lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara, below the Rift Valley escarpment, is home to various habitats despite its small area (330 sq km/205 sq miles), of which two hundred are occupied by the lake). They range from dense forests fed by springs that emerge at the foot of the Rift Valley to savannahs and wetlands.
Among many animal species there are large colonies of baboons, vervet monkeys and other species of monkeys, elephants, giraffes and three hundred and eighty species of birds.
From December to March, large flocks of lesser pink flamingos can be found here which then migrate towards Lake Natron from June to October.
Predators include numerous leopards and lions; the latter, annoyed by soil moisture and insects, have acquired the habit (rather rare in these big cats and found only in a few other areas) of climbing on tree branches.
(2) Visit Mto wa Mbu Village. It is a big agricultural village at the bottom of the Rift Valley Escarppment, an interesting place to get an insight of contemporary life in rural Tanzania.
Here one can find people belonging to the different ethno-linguistic families which compose the complex ethnographic puzzle of Tanzania.
If your flight lands between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. it will still be possible to reach Karatu, yet with no activity en route. If your flight lands later in the afternoon or in the evening it will be necessary to add a night in Arusha before your safari.
Accomodation:
Lodge 1 – Marera Valley Lodge
Lodge 2 – Acacia Farm Lodge Karatu
Lodge 3 – The Manor at Ngorongoro
Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater
Today is dedicated to game drives in the Ngorongoro Crater.
The Ngorongoro Crater is unique and unparalleled in the world.
It is what remains of an ancient volcanic cone, whose peak collapsed about two and a half million years ago, creating the current caldera: a truncated cone containing a large “pan” with a diameter of 16/20 km (9/12 miles) with raised edges reaching about 600 metres (2000 feet) over the ground.
This basin has developed into savannah inhabited by more than 25,000 big game and every species typical of the region, with the exception of the giraffe (which does not find food here) is represented in the Ngorongoro Crater.
The crater rim reaches an altitude of 2,350 metres (7,700 feet) and offers breath-taking views. The outer slopes are covered with dense primary forest.
In the evening you will reach the Serengeti.
Accomodation:
Lodge 1 – Serengeti Pure Camp
Lodge 2 – Nyikani Camp Central Serengeti
Lodge 3 – Serengeti Pioneer Camp
Days 3 and 4: Serengeti National Park
Game drives in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania’s most famous park and one of the most famous in the world.
The Serengeti ecosystem is home to over 1.5 million wildebeests, 400,000 zebras, 500,000 Thompson gazelles, more than 2,700 lions, 1000 leopards, 500 cheetahs, huge herds of elephants, elands, impalas, waterbucks, giraffes, ostriches, and genets. The rivers offer the perfect habitat for crocodiles and hippos; there are more than 400 species of birds.
The 15,000 square kilometres (9320 sq miles) of the Serengeti National Park are only the major portion of a larger ecosystem, which includes the Ngorongoro Plains (the flat region to the north east of the Ngorongoro Crater, which plays an important role in the famous migration and is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area) and the Maasai Mara (which is located further north, in Kenya).
Here the orography, the soil composition and, consequently, the type of vegetation, allow unmatched animal sightings in Africa. The subsoil, made of volcanic rocks especially in the south, prevents the growth of tall trees and grasslands prevail, so the open environment fosters sightings.
Wildebeests and zebras in the Serengeti, always in search of new pastures and water, are part of the largest migratory movement of wild animals anywhere in the world, the Great Serengeti Migration which between December and March congregates in the south-central region of this vast eco-system.

We’ll visit Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater over the course of six exciting days. This itinerary is best experienced between the months of December and March, when the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra can be found on the southern plains of the Serengeti. This is the time of year when newborn wildebeest can be spotted around every corner: a must-see spectacle for wildlife aficionados. Chalema Tanzania Safaris will be your guide to this exhilarating experience—and we’ll make sure you don’t miss a thing.
Tour Plans
Arusha is known for its colorful markets, coffee shops, and mountain views. It also happens to be the safari capital of the entire country! From here, you can easily access all of the parks that comprise Tanzania’s famous Northern Safari Circuit. When you arrive in town, your guide from Chalema Tanzania Safaris will meet you at the Kilimanjaro International Airport to bring you to the first stop on our Northern Circuit migration Tour: the Karama Lodge and Spa, right here in Arusha. Once you’ve checked into your cabin-style suite, you can relax by the pool, stroll through the hotel gardens, or even venture into town for a tasty local meal.
Today we’ll be showcasing the often-overlooked Tarangire National Park, which we’ll reach by traveling west from Arusha for about two hours. The park is a nature lover’s dream, especially in the green season when its tremendous baobab trees are resplendent with emerald leaves. And if you’re visiting during the dry season, you can expect to see truly enormous herds of buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra—often numbering in the thousands. But no matter when you visit, Tarangire is perhaps best distinguished by its resident elephant population. These massive animals can always be relied upon to deliver a first-rate encounter in Tarangire. After finishing our all-day game drive and picnic lunch, we’ll settle in at the Burunge Tented Lodge just outside the park to spend our first night in the bush.
After enjoying our morning coffee or tea, we’ll head out for the far-reaching plains of the Serengeti. We’ll be traveling for approximately four hours today, but much of that time will be spent in the wildlife-rich environment of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. When we reach Serengeti National Park, we’ll concentrate our game drives in the Ndutu region of the southern plains, famous for its year-round population of predators. The Ndutu area also happens to host the stunning wildebeest and zebra migration each year from December to March. This means that you’ll have the rare opportunity to see newborn wildebeest take their first steps, only minutes after they’re born. Later this evening, we’ll get settled in at the Ndutu Bush Camp, where we’ll spend the next two nights.
The spectacle of the Great Migration is the star of the show in the Serengeti, and the wildebeest here synchronize their births during the months between December and March so that there are too many calves for predators to catch all at once. Thousands of the antelopes are born every day at this time of year, and this sudden influx of easy prey tends to attract the big cats of the Serengeti: lions, leopards, and cheetahs. We’ll spend the entire day in the park, stopping for a picnic lunch within sight of the herds. Tonight, we’ll return to the Ndutu Bush Camp to enjoy dinner before comparing notes with other travelers around the campfire.
After treating ourselves to breakfast while watching the splendid Serengeti sunrise, we’ll enjoy one more game drive as we make our way out of the park en route to Ngorongoro Crater. This short trip takes only about two hours to cross the scenic Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater itself was formed millions of years ago by an erupting volcano—today, it’s a natural haven for all sorts of wildlife, including Africa’s Big Five. There’s no better reserve in Tanzania to find the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhinoceros all in one place. But there are also many other animals to see here, such as spotted hyenas, cheetahs, jackals, and more than 500 different kinds of bird. After leaving the crater tonight, we’ll check in at the stylish Eileen’s Tree Inn nearby Karatu.
This morning we’ll be visiting the lively village of Mto wa Mbu, where you’ll get to experience many unique facets of Tanzanian culture. The village is a genuine melting pot of many different ethnicities—in fact, all of Tanzania’s 120 tribes are represented here in one place! From hard-working farmers cultivating three dozen varieties of bananas to gifted artisans crafting one-of-a-kind products in colorful workshops, Mto wa Mbu is a feast for the senses. We’ll explore the markets, churches, and schools in town before enjoying a fascinating tour of a local rice plantation. Here we’ll enjoy a traditional lunch before departing to the airport. We only have two hours on the road today to return to Arusha, when we’ll bring you back to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. We’re proud that you’ve chosen Chalema Tanzania Safaris to be your guide to the Northern Circuit, and we hope you’ll be in touch when you’re ready for another unforgettable African safari.

Huge herds of wildebeest, gazelle and zebra moving clockwise to find better grazing areas. Although nature and its rainfall determine exactly where the migrating animal will be in winter, Ndutu is a reliable base at this time of the year, allowing us to maximize our opportunities for tracking the animals. During our journey to Ndutu, you can enjoy the sheer scale of Tanzania’s territory. From December to March, the herds are grazing in the southern, east-central plains of the park and also the Ndutu area of Ngorongoro. End of January and February is the season that they are giving birth to their calves.
After lunch, you will begin your afternoon game drive where you can expect to see large numbers of elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many exotic bird species. Day 3: Southern Serengeti (Ndutu Area)
The endless plains of the Serengeti…
Today’s tour departs around 6am in search of nocturnal predators returning from their night’s hunting or animals waking up in the early dawn. Breakfast boxes will be prepared and you will take a brief stop for a bush breakfast to enjoy the sun rise. Next, your drive will continue to look for prides of lions, cheetahs and leopards, all in abundance in the Serengeti.
Later in the afternoon, when the sun is less intense, you have the option to go on an early evening game drive or a nature walk around the camp with the resident tribesmen, who will be happy to share their knowledge of the regions’ plants and animals with you.
If you wish to maximise your time in the park, lunch can also be taken as a picnic – a long day but an experience you won’t forget.
You will stop at one of the parks’ beautiful picnic areas for a relaxed lunch and refreshments before continuing on your afternoon game drive, returning to your camp/lodge by mid-afternoon to avoid the intense heat of the sun. Watching the thousands of wildebeest and zebra majestically floating along the seemingly endless plains of the Serengeti is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience you will never forget.
Overnight at your chosen camp/lodge in Ndutu (Full Board)
Day 4: Ndutu Area – Ngorongoro Crater
After an early breakfast you will begin your journey to the stunning Ngorongoro Conservation Area. By lunchtime, you will be descending into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, formed when a volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself 2-3 million years ago. You will enjoy your first game drive around the crater floor, stopping for a picnic lunch at one of the many scenic lunch spots. With its 2,000-foot-high walls, very few animals migrate in and out of the crater making it an area with its one of the highest concentrations of wild animals in the world.
You’ll be searching for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes and many rare birds you might even get to see the “Big Five” all in one day!
At around 6pm you will depart for your lodge perched on the edge of the crater rim. The rest of the evening can be spent relaxing and enjoying the spectacular views over this prehistoric landscape.
Overnight at your chosen lodge in the Ngorongoro Crater or on the rim or in Karatu (Full Board)
Day 5: Ngorongoro Conservation Area/Karatu – Kilimanjaro Int. Airport/Arusha Airport
